Common Skin Problems in Babies

Known for its softness and sweet smell, a baby’s skin is also prone to a wide variety of skin conditions and rashes. Some of these are common because of the hormones associated with being in the womb, while others are due to environmental factors or illnesses.

There are some infants who are born with small pimples on their bodies, while others acquire them in the weeks following birth. This condition is known as baby acne. This generally clears up in a few weeks or a few months at most.

Cradle cap is defined as the scaly, crusty skin on a baby’s head, eyebrows, and ears. This typically develops in the first few months of life and will generally disappear by the time the child turns one year old.

An itchy rash on a newborn’s skin, which is called eczema or atopic dermatitis, can be triggered by many factors. This includes moisture, saliva round the mouth, food allergies, and sensitivity to soaps or detergents. If these are not eliminated from the environment, it will typically recur.

When an infant’s skin is wet or moist, diaper rash can occur. It can be cured with the use of specialised creams. Changing the nappies regularly can also prevent this from occurring.
